Texas Tech has had some injury problems of its own in the past month, with key G Keenan Evans (17.8 ppg) having to fight his way thru a painful turf toe, and injury-prone C Zach Smith having trouble staying on the court for extended minutes. But the mid season form of the Red Raiders seemed to resurface in Dallas, as a healthier Evans (45 points in the two games in Big D) and frosh F Zhaire Smith (18 points in the second-round win over the Gators) highlighted Beard’s collection of diverse play makers. And the active Red Raider defense continued to be able to deliver key stops, as it has done for much of the season. Although the key to any advancement remains the continued health of the electric Evans, who was touch-and-go in his first few games following the toe injury before looking more like himself last weekend (Evans said he felt “about 85 percent” after the Florida win). Defense, however, travels in March. And that combination with a healthier Evans gives Texas Tech a chance to get to the Elite Eight. Besides, I'm more than a bit reluctant to recommend an investment on Purdue, considering the Boilermakers’ recent and considerable point spread shortcomings.

I have thought that for much of the season, Nova was the best team in the country on the most nights. Though the Wildcats are hardly immune, having been dumped by Butler, St. John’s, and Providence along the way. Those losses, however, might be a valuable tool for a Nova bunch that, while still owning a couple of pieces from its dramatic title run in 2016, also has components that recall last year’s early sub-regional exit courtesy of Wisconsin, as well as those three losses this season, which Wright will make sure erase any overconfidence on his veteran squad.

The Wildcats struggled without Trier on Thursday at 10th-place Oregon State, needing two free throws by Rawle Alkins with 14 seconds left in regulation to push the game to overtime, where they finally pulled away for a 75-65 victory. Oregon got a much-needed win against No. 25 Arizona State on Thursday, and that should give the Ducks added confidence against the Wildcats, who beat Oregon 90-83 behind 25 points from Trier on Jan. 13. The Ducks enter the weekend tied for sixth in the conference with Washington, and they can leapfrog a few more teams with a strong finish against Arizona and at Washington State and Washington next week. But even with that, they rank 3rd, 7th, 1st, & 2nd in run, pass, scoring, & total "D". So, still a huge force. The last 2 years, we've bucked the Tigers in their semi-final games vs Oklahoma & Ohio State. Mistake & mistake, as CU (-3½, +1½) dominated both with a combined score of 68-17, and a 1,000-593 yd edge! Absolutely stunning, especially in light of the fact that both the Sooners & Buckeyes entered with identical 11-1 records. Dabo sure can coach. Their offensive fireworks have overshadowed one of the finest stop units in the land (#10). For the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest, this marks just their 12th bowl game, the first coming in their 26-14 win over South Carolina, in the '46 Gator Bowl, & the latest, in last year's Military Bowl, when, as 11-pt underdogs vs Temple, they jumped to a 31-7 lead, holding on for the 34-26 win. That one was noteworthy for 2 reasons: the fact that the Owls entered on a 10-0 ATS run; & holding Temple to minus 20 RYs, (TU at 190 RYpg at game time). For Wake, back-to-back bowl seasons, on the heels of 8 straight losing campaigns, including 3-9 records in '14 & '15. They're led by QB Wolford, who ranks 10th in passing efficiency, throwing for 2,792 yards, 64%, & a sensational 25/6. In back-to-back-to-back games vs Louisville, NoDame & Syracuse, he threw for 1,155 yds, 69%, & 10/1, leading Wake to 143 points, Oh, in that Syracuse game, Deacs turned a 17-pt second half deficit, into a 21-point win. So not much wrong with Deacs' 27th, ranked "O", nor a spread streak that now stands at 16-6-1.

The arrival of Mike Gundy in '05, has resulted in 12 straight bowl seasons, with at least 10 wins in 5 of the past 7 years, nearly meeting for the '11 national title game, before an impossible 37-31 loss to 26½ pt underdog on week #11 shattered that dream. They have been led by brilliant QB Rudolph (4,553 yards, 65%, & 35/9), who has thrown for 13,267 yards in his career, & 84/22 the past 3 years. But he isn't the only cog in this wheel, as Hill is at 1,347 RYs (14 TDs), & WRs Washington & Ateman have combined for 2,572 receiving yards, averaging 20.6 & 19.4 yards per catch. There has only bee two teams that have outplayed every one of their opponents this season, the mighty Sooners of Oklahoma, & the unnoticed Bulls of South Florida. So, moving the ball has hardly been a problem, especially since the prolific Quinton Flowers took over the leadership role in '15. He has amassed 11,201 yards the past 3 years, with USF compiling a 28-9 SU record, while gracing the Miami Beach & Birmingham Bowls, prior to this year's defense of the latter bowl. His worth is nearly impossible to overstate. Just check USF's season finale game with a perfect Central Florida, where he piled up 503 passing yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception along with 102 rushing yards, tying it on an 83-yard TD pass in the final 1:41, only to lose on a TD return of the ensuing KO. This marks the Bulls' 3rd straight bowl game, & 9th in the last 13 years. The line on this one is a bit perplexing, as the balanced attack of the Bulls seems to more than counter Tech's one-dimensional offense.

Strange split of series this season with road team winning each of first two, most recently a wild 135-130 Cleveland win at Philips Arena on March 3 that was an early warning sign of Cleveland’s ongoing post-All-Star break defensive woes. Maybe some relief is on the way for Cavs, as J.R. Smith (14-for-25 from 3-point range over the last three games entering the week) finally finding his rhythm, so there’s a little less pressure on the Cavs’ shoddy defense. But LeBron played a season-high 52 minutes in Game 76 on Sunday (a double-OT win over Indiana), and the defense couldn’t stop a fairly simple pin-down action from freeing up Paul George (causing some serious friction between James and Tristan Thompson) that could have won the game for Pacers. I am not convinced the Tar Heels are quite as good as their 2016 edition, which also made it to the final game and was tied with Villanova in the final second before a Kris Jenkins 3-pointer won it for the Wildcats. That UNC edition had an athletic big in 6-9 Brice Johnson and a nervy bomber in Marcus Paige who was not afraid to step up and take the big shot. Still, the 2017 version has proven remarkably resilient, already pulling three nailbiters out of the fire in the Dance. And there is always a chance that an unsuspecting hero (such as capable sr. G Nate Britt, who sank a couple of key shots on Saturday vs. Oregon) steps forward for the Heels. But, aside from Meeks and Jackson, UNC was a combined 8 for 42 from the floor in the semis and did not appear entirely comfortable with their shots, probably bothered by the depth perception adjustments in the football stadium. Though I don’t expect Berry and Hicks to shoot a combined 3 for 26 from the floor as on Saturday, I am not sure Williams can count on much scoring from them, either. And let’s not forget that the Gonzaga defense has allowed foes to hit only 36.5% from the floor the entire season, tied with UCF (thanks largely to its 7-6 C Tacko Fall) for the top mark in the nation. Previously-hot South Carolina could only connect on 37.9% of its shots on Saturday. The fundamentally-sound Bulldog defense is adept at staying “in front” of opposing dribblers, which should come in very handy vs. the Heels, who as a result are unlikely to be able to crash the glass as usual. A season’s worth of exemplary performance is not a mirage. This Gonzaga edition has beaten all comers (except a late-season home letdown vs. explosive BYU), with most of the big wins away from Spokane. With depth, balance, size, and more athleticism on the perimeter than past editions, the Zags also appear built to beat the Tar Heels, who will likely fall just short for the second straight year.

The normal North Carolina size edge, which Williams has exploited all season for a nation’s-best +13 rebound margin, and resultant dominance on the offensive glass, might come harder this weekend for the Heels. That’s because, against the Ducks, Williams is likely reluctant to go with his normal bigs of 6-10 Kennedy Meeks and 6-9 Isaiah Hicks at the same time, as the defensive match ups caused by Oregon’s lineup figure to force Roy’s hand. That’s because Williams could get away with committing Hicks or Meeks to Oregon’s mobile 6-9 pivot Jordan Bell, but neither would be a good fit against the Ducks’ 6-7 wing Dillon Brooks, their most likely other defensive assignment. Expect, then, to see Williams use a lot more of F Luke Maye, which might not be an altogether bad thing after Maye excelled (16.5 ppg) in last weekend’s regionals at Memphis, including hitting the game-winning jump shot in the last second vs. Kentucky. But Maye’s presence will likely be at the expense of either Meeks or Hicks (and also perhaps of 6-10 frosh Tony Bradley, who has played key minutes for UNC in the Dance), which would correspondingly limit some of the trademark dominance the Heels have displayed on the boards all season...especially on the offensive glass. There is also going to be plenty of pressure on Heel PG Joel Berry to hit some outside shots (especially with 6-8 wing Justin Jackson misfiring repeatedly beyond the arc last weekend, when he hit just 3 of 13 triples in Memphis) and to limit his TOs, both of which have been recurring issues in the Dance.

While South Carolina's joyride might be coming to an end vs. tall, deep, and experienced Gonzaga, the point spread of 6½ seems enticing enough to shade the dog. The Zags have four DD scorers, with their top seven players logging 17 or more minutes per game. Rotating seven-footers Przemek Karnowski (12.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Zach Collins (9.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg) represent inside size rarely encountered TY by USC. But Gonzaga really only pulled away from upstart Xavier in the Elite Eight when the Zags finally started hitting their treys (12 of 24 vs. the Musketeers), and Chris Mack’s Big East overachievers ran out of gas. Hitting from distance is hard to do vs. the in-your-face (but rarely fouling) Gamecock defense, as USC’s foes have found out. Opposing coaches have been praising the Cocks for how well they “close out.” One of the more impressive occurrences in the tourney has been the development and confidence shown by the South Carolina attack, which suffered through some erratic stretches in the regular season.

It can be tough as nails and oh-so-rare to knock off Calipari twice in the same campaign. But prefer to support UCLA (third Sweet 16 in last 4 years), who lead the nation in scoring (90.3 ppg), FG percentage (51.9%), assists (21.5 pg) and assist-to-TO ratio. The Bruins have also been hustling more on the stop end (42% FGs allowed; 5.4 bpg; 11th nationally) down the stretch. Admittedly, the Wildcats’ defense is more “connected” after finally internalizing Coach Cal’s philosophy. Nevertheless, UK will once again have trouble slowing down the explosive Bruin attack now that sharp-shooting sr. G Bryce Alford has snapped out of his mini-slump by canning 4 of 11 from distance in his team’s 79-67 victory over defensively-sticky Cincinnati in the Round of 32. The same can’t be said for the Wildcats’ frosh sensation, 6-3 G Malik Monk, who has converted a rim-clanking 20 of 64 from the field (7 of 26 from deep) in his last six outings. The Wildcats’ gifted 6-10 frosh C “Bam” Adebayo has become a greater force in the paint area down the stretch. But UCLA also has been benefiting from more instrumental play supplied by unheralded 7-0 jr. C Thomas Welsh (10.8 ppg), who has scored 27 pts. along with 15 caroms so far in the Big Dance. Moreover, the finely-tuned Bruins have amassed 47 assists while committing a meager 9 TOs vs. gritty Kent State and the defense-oriented Bearcats. And, since the boys from Westwood have transcendent 6-6 frosh Lonzo Ball (considered the likely top lottery pick in the next NBA draft) and UK does not, believe the Wildcats, who narrowly escaped vs. Wichita State in the Round of 32, drop to 0-3 as an underdog their last 3 campaigns.

The Badgers have two key seniors with multiple Final Four experience in Koenig, who has drained 11 3-pointers en route to 45 points through two games of this event, and Nigel Hayes, who is averaging 17.5 points and nine boards through two NCAA contests. None of the current UCLA players likely remember when the Bruins knocked off the top-seeded Bearcats in double-overtime to reach the Sweet Sixteen in 2002, but the Bruins probably learned a lot about it during their off day. Like that day when Dan Gadzuric dominated the middle, Jason Kapono was sharp from outside and freshman point guard Cedric Bozeman ran the offense smoothly and efficiently, UCLA will need 6-10 freshman T.J. Leaf to be the best post player on both teams, Bryce Alford to shoot a high percentage from outside and Ball to distribute the ball well. Kentucky coach John Calipari has the best seat in the house and it should only get better as his team - loaded with future pros - continues to mature. The Wildcats should have little trouble avenging a 75-70 loss to the Tigers in Auburn, Ala., last season that snapped an 18-game winning streak in the series. The Tigers could be without freshman forward Danjel Purifoy (13.7 points, 5.8 rebounds per game), the team's second-leading scorer and rebounder who missed Tuesday's 77-72 victory in Missouri because of an ankle injury.

The Bulls own one of the most prolific offenses in the land, with QB Flowers doing it overhead & overland: first 2,000 yard passer, & 1,000 yard rusher in school history (2,551 passing yards, 61.5%, & 1,425 rushing yards, 8.1 yards per rush, & 15 TDs, to be exact. And he is more than complemented by RB Mack's 1,137 yards (7.1 yards per rush), 15 TDs. A 10-2 SU log, ranking 5th, 7th, 10th in rushing, scoring, total offense. But just a 4-4-1 ATS windup. Why? Well, try a sieve defense which ranks 90th, 118th, 83rd, & 118th in run, pass, scoring & total defense. Have allowed 38.2 points per game in their last 5 games. Thus a very juicy opportunity for opposing attacks. But can South Carolina, & their highly inept offense take advantage. Well, even if they can, up to a point, this is still a romp.

Rating: 3 Unit Bowl Play of the Day

This year marks an historic first for Temple, which had managed just a single 10-win season in its first 85 years ('79), & hadn't matched it, before last year's 10-4 mark. So back-to-back double digit win campaigns for a school that had formerly achieved that milestone just once, previously. And as far as bowl appearances go, this is their 4th in the last 8 years, but just their 6th in their history ('79 Garden State, & '34 Sugar, with Pop Warner on the sidelines). They've run off an unprecedented ELEVEN straight covers, & enter this on a 7 game SU run, with a 157-33 point edge in their last 5 games (+73½ points ATS). QB Walker is the first Temple player to reach the 10,000 yd mark for his career, while RBs Thomas & Armstead have an exact same 918 yards (13,14 TDs). But it's the defense that rules, ranking 2nd, 8th, & 3rd in passing, scoring & total defense. Probably, Owls' most impressive game was their 528-352 yard edge in 46-30 win over potent South Florida, as Bulls average 515 yards per game.

The Wildcats let me down, big time, last week, as I had them a Top Rated Choice. On their way to a typical rout of in state rival Kansas, they led 27-3 (26-point favorite) with nearly 10 minutes left in the 3rd, & having the Jays penned in at KU's 5, they allowed a 95-yard TD pass. They later led 34-9 with 14:56 left, but never scored again. Looking to this one, perhaps? Snyder well remembers the Frogs scoring 2 TDs in final 6:05 of last year's 52-45 loss. Tcu hasn't covered at home all year, losing their last home game by 24½ points ATS. And comparative scores all in KSt's favor. They also covered their last road game by 23 points.

Check balanced 261 rushing yards, 257 rushing yards last week behind QB Allen RB Hill. They have won last 5 games, while covering all 5 by combined 85 points. And a year ago, Hill wrecked the Rebs, with 232 rushing yards. Sure, this one is on the road, but the 'Pokes upset Boise in last vistor role (16-0 point cover). Vols were tied for 8th in the land in the "Polls" column, after winding up 2015 with a 35 points per game average, and 9 returning offensive starters. But they needed a 67-yard Dobbs TD pass to extend Appalachian State into OT (20-13 win), with only 127 rushing yards. Beamer-less Tech overcame 4 lost fumbles for rout of Liberty, allowing just 1 offensive TD. Hokies as a double digit dog is definitely the play.

Can the hapless 'Cats finally turn the corner? Los Angeles is coming off winning back-to-back home games during this preseason. One might think these teams are primed for a letdown. However, one of my favorite football analysts, Lee Corso, would say, “Not so fast, my friend!” That’s because teams in this role are a solid 50-28-2 ATS (3-0 last season) when taking to the road off a pair of home victories in the preseason since 1983. If these same teams go as dogs and they respond huge, going 20-5-1 ATS.

Bill Belichick to go full bore tonight in his quest to find the lineup he’ll need to open the season without QB Tom Brady. New England brings a 4-0 SUATS mark this year into preseason skirmishes against NFC South competition. And thanks to the schedule maker, Bill Belichick’s team owns a distinct 2-day rest advantage over the Panthers this evening. Given Carolina’s struggles in this series (1-6 SU and 0-6-1 ATS in preseason contests), and Bilichick's 5-0 SUATS log on Fridays in exhibition games the last four years, I cement my contentions with THE CLINCHER: Carolina is 0-8 ATS in preseason home openers versus AFC opponents.

Pete Carroll has been been nothing special in home openers against NFC opposition, where they are 1-3 SUATS in his career. Worse, Carroll remains winless in preseason contests against Minnesota (0-3 SUATS). Another clincher, though, is the Vikings’ DOUBLE REVENGE aspect they take into this affair as Seattle not only handed them their worst loss of the season last year in a 38-7 win at Minnesota the first week in December but also ended their campaign with a 10-9 win in the Twin Cities in the opening round of the playoffs as well. With revenge the Vikes enter with a sterling 8-2 SU and 7-2-1 ATS mark in Game Two’s of the preseason. This years Kansas State team is not Snyder's most dominant edition, outplaying only 1-of-9 conference opponentss (0-12 Kansas). QB Hubener is just 9 touchdowns with 9 interceptions and 47.8%, and cannot ignore Kansas State's #109 and #101 offense an defense rankings. Also, a 226-139 point deficit in its L6 games, and 2-10 ATS bowl record. It's another matter for the Hogs, who've had stat edges in 9-of-12 games, and that includes bowl-bound Toledo, TexA&M, Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Lsu. QB Allen (3,125 yards, 65.1%, 29 touchdowns with 7 interceptions) leads the SEC in touchdown passes, yards per attempt (9.08), and total QB rating (87.2). RB Collins ranks 16th in the land with 1,392 yards, 17 touchdowns. Thus, a balanced attack that was held in check just once. Guess who? Right, Alabama. And the Wildcats are no Crimson Tide. Obviously, I always respect Snyder in the dog role, but allowing 31+ points 7 times in an 8-game stretch this year hardly a hopeful sign. And UA (-7) took Texas, 31-7, in last year's Texas Bowl.

What a start Michigan made, opening at 5-1, with a 160-14 point edge when they entertained Michigan State, holding a 23-21 lead in the closing seconds only to botch a punt, which was returned for a touchdown after the clock ran out. But then 4 straight wins, before wipe out 42-13 finale loss Ohio State (369-57 rushing yard deficit). Improved, but vulnerable. Offense revolves around QB Rudock (2,739 yards, 64%, 17 touchdowns and 9 interceptions), as UM ranks 97th in rushing. But try nation's 4th-ranked defense though. Thus, the Gators, and their 109th ranked offense should definitely feel the heat. Florida has also welcomed new head coaching (McElwain from Colorado State), with a 10-3 log the result, although it has been the takeaway that has been the major contributor (4 in upset of OleMiss, 5 in rout of Georgia). In their SEC title match with Alabama (29-15 loss), the Gators were on the short end of 25-7, 233-15 rushing yard, 437-180 rushing yard margins (touchdowns on 85-yard punt return and 46-yard pass). At least Michigan can move it. In addition, Michigan is 5-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss. 5-1 ATS in their last six after a straight up loss. 9-3 ATS in their last 12 after giving up more than 200 yards on the ground.

That is, until this season, when they took full advantage of no less than 18 starters (10 offensively), although it hardly seemed the case, as they opened at 3-4, with tough losses to Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, and Arkansas (combined 40-10), after leading or tied in the 4th quarter in each. However, note turning a 21-point deficit to Georgia, into a 38-31 win, along with a 5-game SU run to wind it all up, including that 53-point outburst versus a Vandy team which had allowed just 21 points per game in its first 11 games. QB Dobbs is their key, although he finished 68th in pass efficiency (2,125 yards, 60%, 15 touchdown and 5 interceptions). However, he led the SEC in QB rushing yards (9 touchdowns).

This year appeared dismal for Mississippi State, until Prescott and his do-everything talent, opted to return for his Senior year. And he is once more extremely dangerous, as shown in Mississppi State's 51-50 win over Arkansas, in which he threw for 508 yards and 5 touchdowns, and ran for 46 yards and 2 touchdowns. By season's end he became only the 6th SEC player to account for at least 100 touchdowns. This year, he is at 284.4 passing yards per game, 67%, and 25 touchdowns with 4 interceptions, while leading the Bulldogs with 541 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. The Wolfpack of North Carolina State opened at 4-0, but those wins came versus teams with Power Ratings of 25, 27, 28, along with a non-lined outfit. Just 3 wins thereafter, against Wake Forest, Boston College, and Syracuse, teams with 3-9, 3-9, and 4-8 records. So nary a win over any sort of quality opponent, although they did stay with Clemson for a half, before inevitable 56-41 loss (623-389 yard deficit). QB Brissett is an efficient 61.3%, and solid 19 touchdowns with 4 interceptions,  but the North Carolina State running game is a shambles with the loss of Dayes (6.5 yards per rush, 12 touchdowns), and Thornton. The Bulldogs with a totally different psyche from last year's bowl loss

For the Air Force, this marks its 8th bowl game in the past 9 years, missing only with '13's brutal 2-10 record squad, which ranked 116th and 114th in scoring and total defense. However, head coach Calhoun then guided them to a record-tying 8-game turnaround with last years 10-3 record, including a 38-24 win over Western Michigan in the Idaho Potato Bowl, with a 284-79 rushing yard edge. This year, the home team has won 11-of-13 Air Force games on the field, but check a 37-30 win at Boise (18-point cover) with 328-141 rushing yard edge. By the way, the Falcons rank 23rd in total defense. I'll be shocked if this doesn't turn into a barn burner. This one is an underdog call.

So this makes 8 consecutive bowl campaigns for this somewhat unnoticed school, which has gone 2-5, both SU & ATS, in its previous holiday ventures. However, a definite bowl trend comes into play, as the favorite has won & covered ALL 7 of those games, most notably in their 31-10 (+13½) loss to Florida State in the '12 Orange Bowl. Nicely balance, but lost QB Hare (1,962, 14/4) in upset of previously perfect Toldeo (Nov 3). Couldn't stay with Bowling Green in MAC title (501-259 yard deficit). Saints in off OT loss, despite another 387 passing yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interceptions from Drew who now has 898 passing yards with 10 touchdowns and 2 interceptions the past 2 weeks. Well, four lost fumbles put those stats into the trash bin. Still, the dog is 12-3-1 ATS in Cleveland games, and the Browns are 9-0 ATS as non-division home dogs. One reason a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday was so crushing is that it meant Keuchel, who is 15-0 with a 1.46 ERA at home, would have to make the start on the road. The All-Star is 5-8 with a 3.77 ERA on the road in 2015 but won at Arizona on Friday and will be making Tuesday’s start on three days’ rest for the first time in his career. Keuchel struck out nine and scattered three hits in seven scoreless frames at New York on Aug. 25 and is 2-1 with a 1.13 ERA in three career starts against the Yankees.

Tanaka tuned up on Wednesday against Boston and was reached for four runs on five hits and a walk in five innings without factoring in the decision. St. Louis’ defensive strength is a fierce pass rush that has accounted for eight sacks. Roethlisberger counters this by operating a no-huddle offense. Pittsburgh’s offense is going to be even better now because Le’Veon Bell comes off suspension. Bell set a Steelers team record by gaining 2,215 yards from scrimmage last season. It wasn’t pretty, and although there is potential to improve, potential at -5.5 is a tightrope walk. The Eagles could not run DeMarco Murray much on Monday Night because of the scoreboard situation.
